All the old cliches are poked fun at in a light way. And as great as Chan is, and as much as he carries most films he's in with his sweet charms and likable personas, Wilson comes across as equally likable as Chan.
Chan's martial arts are usually the highlights of these films, but in this he proves he can do more than just kick -- he can be funny.
Well, okay, he proved that in "Rush Hour" , but I like this better. The jokes in "Shanghai Noon" aren't "great," but I laughed a lot at this film.
It's smarter than one might think, and is certainly one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in quite some time.
Probably years. I wasn't expecting much especially because I wasn't an enormous fan of the sequel--see below , but if fun could be rated on a scale of 1 - 10, this would be an I give this film nothing more than four out of five stars because it's not a great film on all critical levels.
But it's certainly fun--likely more fun than any film you'll see for quite some time--and for that it will soon be earning a place in my sacred DVD collection.

As far as Jackie Chan's US expedition, this might actually be one of the best, if not the best. I'd honestly have to watch the first Rush Hour to make that distinction.
I'm not even bothering with Rush Hour 2 or 3, because it's obvious that those aren't any good, particularly Rush Hour 3. Anyway, this is clearly not one of Jackie's best as it relates to action or out of this world stunts, but it does offer a good alternative to that.
With that said, I do think the film spends its sweet time getting to where Jackie and Owen team up with each other, but I still enjoyed everything leading up to that.
I will say that, if you're watching on Netflix, and are using the English subtitles, there are lines of dialogue spoken in Mandarin and Sioux that will not be translated into English.
So unless you know mandarin or Sioux, you will not understand what they're saying in any of these scenes. They do, however, show the translations if you used the Spanish subtitles instead of the English ones.
Good thing I come from a Spanish-speaking island. But talk about annoying, it actually took me like 30 minutes before I figured this out. It's not like the first 30 minutes are all in Mandarin and Sioux, but there's still a good chunk of the film that people who only speak English will not be able to pick up on, unless Netflix fixes the English subtitles.
Don't even know why I pointed that out, I guess it just really annoyed the shit out of me. With that said, it's not like I have much to say about this.
It's an older movie that isn't really what you would call memorable. With that said, I did think Jackie's action scenes were probably closer to what he would actually do in Hong Kong than he managed to do on this side of the world.
Not that Rush Hour didn't have some of that, but I just think there's more of it here. And there's some solid chemistry between Owen and Jackie, there's the usual, goofy banter and the growing respect between the two that have been cliches in these films forever, but I found it entertaining regardless.
This is the type of movie that you'll see playing on your local cable channel at 6pm right before the primetime shows come on.
It's something that might even be used as background noise. I've probably even used this film as background noise while I do something else, but it is a fun little movie.
It's nothing special and, 15 years later, it's not like anyone actually remembers this. I still think this is a pretty good movie all things considered.
I'd recommend it if you have Netflix, it's that type of movie. Fun stuff that's very easy to watch. Jesse O Super Reviewer.

This film has not aged, unlike other tired buddy films over the years, the key to this success is the heart of the characters involved.
I watched this with high hopes and it didn't let me down, I wasn't a giant fan when I watched it on release but it has crept into my movie collection.
They should revisit this franchise considering both Wilson and Chan are lacking the clout they once had. Great film to share with a younger audience as well.

This is one good comedy that is lots of fun from start to finish. The film has the right amount of action to go with the comedy to really make this film an entertaining ride.
I'm usually not that into Jackie Chain, but on occasion he surprises me, and with Shanghai Noon he really delivers a good funny performance.
If you want a great action comedy, then this is your film. Director Tom Dey directs a good cast and he has a good idea how to convey an effective action film with comedy.
Of course Shanghai Noon isn't perfect, but this is the type of film that is far better than Rush Hour. The reason it's better is because you have a better cast, better director and better story.
Also the comedy is better. This film is actually funny. I very much loved this film, and thought that Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan had really good chemistry on-screen that made the film much better than it was.

View All Critic Reviews Aug 14, Don't ask me why I decided to watch this movie last night, but I did. Roy tells him the city is on the other side of a mountain, and Wang leaves two chopsticks in Roy's mouth to dig himself out.
Reaching the other side of the mountain, Wang saves a Sioux boy from the Crow tribe and half-consciously marries the Sioux chief's daughter, Falling Leaves, during the wild celebrations.
Wang finds a small town and encounters Roy in a tavern, inciting a barroom brawl. The two are sent to jail, and share each other's stories.
Tempted by mention of the gold ransom, Roy offers to help Wang find the princess. As they are about to be hanged, Wang frees himself, Falling Leaves shoots Roy loose, and they escape.
Wang, upset at overhearing Roy tell a prostitute he is not Wang's friend, rides off alone. He finds Pei-Pei in Lo Fong's labor camp, but she wishes to stay and help the enslaved Chinese laborers.
Lo Fong discovers Wang and attacks him, but Roy appears, saving Wang. Wang tells his fellow guards he will not allow them to take the princess against her wishes.
Roy survives unscathed, and shoots Van Cleef through his sheriff's star. Wang and Lo Fong reach the bell tower, and Pei-Pei is wounded.
Wang dismantles the bell, causing the ropes to strangle Lo Fong. Wallace and his gang arrive at the church, and demand that Roy and Wang come out and fight, but find themselves surrounded by the Sioux.
Roy, who reveals his real name to be Wyatt Earp , and Wang become sheriffs and ride off after a new band of train robbers. Shanghai Noon was well received by critics.
