The first third of the film works to establish two things: what Gina's Lively daily life is like as a blind person, and the type of relationship she and her husband Jason Clarke have.
We get an abundance of distorted light flashes to simulate what she has lived with since the car accident that took away her parents and her vision during childhood.
Gina's doctor Danny Huston performs a transplant which successfully restores her vision. The bulk of the story revolves around the changes that vision brings to her life and how the marriage begins disintegrating.
The best message here is what happens to a relationship as the individuals change and evolve. Specifically in this case, the wife gains an entirely new perspective, while the husband longs for the days where she was dependent on him.
At times it feels as if director Forster is working hard to create the look and feel of an experimental movie, rather than focusing on the story. There are some interesting visuals provided by locations and camera angles, although the moody atmosphere never really clicks.
Lively singing "Double Dutch" provides an ending that is both odd and mesmerizing in a strange way. We are reminded that evil and self-centeredness can take on many forms, though this film never quite packs the dramatic punch it should.

All I See Is You hints at a number of intriguing questions with its premise, but they dissolve in a stylish yet empty psychodrama that fails to connect.

Despite an interesting premise and a promising first act, All I See Is You ultimately fails to deliver much beyond a gradual descent into disinterest and watch-checking.
James Berardinelli. You might be laughing at the movie by the time you reach its go-for-broke final shot, but the look on Lively's face is enough to fulfill the idea that loving someone is not the same as needing someone.
David Ehrlich. Glenn Kenny. Somewhere in this interestingly shot mystery there's an exploration of identity, masculinity and marital discord, but those themes are obscured by the sublime, strange Blake Liveliness of it all.

But that's part of the way they try to bring you into the same old politics of how terrible and oppressing the white man is. He must deserve to die at the end while we praise her for saving her sight and having a child from an affair?
Really a disgusting and pathetic. This film is not getting the credit it deserves. Watch it closely. Understand the characters and watch the development of the husband as he goes from mildly controlling but adoring caretaker of his blind wife, to a man adrift as she begins her journey of discovery once her sight has been restored.
He was fully content with life exactly as it was. Every calculated choice he made from where they lived to the clothes she wore was done in support her social isolation and his need for physical and emotional control.
The movie shows her progression into a world of color, friends, experiences, and his psychological collapse into doing whatever was needed to reverse the circumstances, including tampering with the medication needed to maintain her sight.
So my mom would call this movie "artsy fartsy", lol! She would also say that it's full of moral corruption. She would be right on both accounts.
However, this movie is also incredibly well done and thought provoking. The character development and the story are both a thoroughly satisfying experience.
I'm going to be chewing on the questions this story asked for a long time. BUT, you should probably know what you are getting into.
I believe quite a few of these poor ratings are based on the wrong expectations going into the movie. It definitely isn't a romantic drama or a particularly exciting thriller.
It's more of a winding story that is meant to resonate with the audience on an emotional level and take us to a place where we can look at and experience some of the darker themes of love and relationships.
Aristotle's Poetics may be particularly applicable here. Aristotle explains that art is beneficial to people because it allows us to view and experience emotions and life themes as an outside spectator.
Often, this is a relieving and rejuvenating experience. At least, that was my main takeaway from Poetics, lol. I felt like this movie did that for me.
Now, this movie did earn its R rating. There is gratuitous nudity, sex and sexual themes that may not be considered mainstream by a lot of people. I have a moderately high tolerance for sexual themes specifically if I feel it is justified for story or character development.
This movie was over the top for me. I found it distracting and actually skipped a few of them which caused me to miss an important development in the story.
The movie would have much better flow with fewer sex scenes that highlighted the important dynamics in the relationships.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. There's this girl with an idiot husband, creepy brother in law, and no apparent means of support. She's blind. She gets her sight back.
Somebody wrote a disjointed, pointless, rambling movie about her. The end. I dub thee 3. I understand where the 5 star reviews AND the 1 star reviews are coming from.
I ordered this albeit free as a Prime member, thankfully thinking it would be more suspenseful and thrilling I would have appreciated a more accurate description - that this is an artsy and subtle portrayal of the marriage unraveling by its main thread - her blindness.
It was more beautiful and sad than thrilling and suspenseful, and that is where I think the 1 star reviewers may feel disappointment.
Also, there are many sex scenes which were surprising, especially those showing a peep show. While the initial sex scenes were more artistic, and pleasing, I can see how the peep show would also be artistic in as much as how she now "sees" sex with her eyes and he cannot bring himself to see anyone sexually but her, even taping their personal sexual scenes for his own viewing pleasure.
Again, had there been more of a heads up in terms of what you'd be watching, I think this film would have been better received. That said, the most helpful recent review of 5 stars does give it a more accurate description.
It is beautiful, intricately layered with much thought to the expression of the film's theme in each scene - how do we see, what do we see, and how do our choices affect what those things are for ourselves and our loved ones.
