Fishburne also tried to instill discipline in Gooding, something that many of the other kids never got at home. The point being that young men needed male role models.
Morris Chestnut as Ricky Baker was a high school football star who believed that sports was his ticket out of the ghetto.
He also struggled with his SATs to be eligible for a university. His mother not only neglected him, but berated him from an early age taking out her frustration with his daddy on him.
She also liked Chestnut much better because of his football skills. He represented all the boys that got caught up in the hood, and had no future besides that.
That included going in and out of jail which started when he was a little kid. Their life was about survival, while they also perpetuated all the problems of the community.
A wonderful debut film written and directed by the late John Singleton. Singleton's story of growing up in South Central L. Themes of race, coming of age, and overcoming violence and drugs abound from start to finish.
Highly recommended. One person found this helpful. This was an amazing piece of work. The acting is top-notch, the writing was excellent.
You care about every one of those kids as much as if they were your own neighbors' kids you'd watched grow up and you are rooting for them to the last.
But--without risking spoilers here--it's very, very difficult to watch. Some of them are clearly doomed from the start, but the violence is so random that there's a high level of tension established early in the movie that never lets up.
Can't recommend this one enough. I used to live in some much better areas in the Bay Area of California. Still, they were worse than what they show here.
And then I got in trouble and ended up in prison there. Plain horrible. Much worse than fighting in a war, even the medium and low security facilities.
I lived in a much worse area once I got out than where I lived before, but I was lucky just to not be homeless. It was really really bad. Triangle Point in North Richmond.
I guess they have renamed it kind of now. It was a ghost town at 9 in the morning and you were safe. Crack being sold on all 4 corners at an intersection!
So this movie is okay, but it downplays how bad things were and still are in those types of areas. I have managed to do well for myself since.
But I will tell you, this movie is just a day in the life in those areas. It is actually pretty disingenuous for the people that have to suffer that lifestyle.
As much as I realize there are people like me getting caught up in bad circumstances, there are also choices made.

I watched this in the theaters ages ago when it first came out! Love that I was able to purchase digitally to watch it whenever I want.
This movie is a classic. Boyz N the Hood created quite the sensation when it first came out in because it was one of the first times that the experience of African American youth in the inner city was put on screen for a mass audience.
And yes, more often than not friendships were ended by death in gun violence that is all too senseless. Most notable African American actors today were in this movie.

The movie is pretty topical and quite reflective in some ways of today showing really how little things have changed.
A good film that perhaps lapses a little at times but as it reaches its climax becomes pretty heart-wrenching. Never seen the film before, not sure how it passed me by all these years The 4K upgrade is in fact pretty good Well worth a viewing.
