I began to look at science non-fiction writing by people like Walter Sullivan, who wrote for the New York Times. And I began to imitate that factual, non-fiction writing style.
It yielded a very cold, detached book that was also weirdly convincing. After I sent Bob Gottlieb the rewritten manuscript, he called up and said I had done very good work, and therefore I only had to write half of it all over again.
I gulped, and said I would. And after that, he would just call me every few days: rewrite the beginning of this chapter.
Redo this description. Add a chapter here. And on, and on. I began to feel persecuted by these demands, which seemed interminable, and increasingly nit-picking.
I did not yet know how rare good editing is. When the book was published, lots of people thought it was true.
It was pretty interesting. When Bob Wise set out to make the movie, his researchers assumed that everything was true, too, so they went out and found all the things the book talked about — the underground laboratory, the computer programs, the biometrics security.
After a while I stopped telling people that I had made it all up, because it turned out that it was based on true things. Many people wrote to ask if the book was true.
The author became a celebrity. The novel was published just weeks before the first lunar landing and for weeks there had been concern about whether the astronauts would bring back germs from the moon.
Readers in the s were fascinated by the technologies discussed in the book: remote surveillance; voice activated systems; computer imaging and diagnosis; handprint identification; hazmat suits, and biosafety procedures.

In the US, many critics drew the opposite conclusion: its Harvard-trained author was located firmly in the establishment, and many questioned whether Michael Crichton was acting unethically, by giving the military new ideas for biological weapons.
But as Michael Crichton repeatedly explained, his purpose in writing had nothing to do with politics. His point concerned science.

We tend to think that crises can be resolved by good leaders, but technological crises often cannot be influenced at all. A skilled leader-one that is more technically trained, or smarter, or quicker-acting-is unlikely to be able to deal with an oil spill better than anyone else.
Major technological crises proceed with complete indifference to personalities. The book tried to make that point, too.

The term became synonymous with any potential pandemic: marburg, ebola, bird flu, and so on. In the early years of AIDS the virus was often referred to as an Andromeda Strain, and the novel was erroneously cited as predicting such new strains.
I get invitations like this every few weeks. Mosquitoes can infect you with the AIDS virus. Unproven, and unlikely.
Doctors who care for AIDS patients are getting the disease none has, except those in a known risk group. So I am not going to add to the rumors in any way.
I refused to speak. However, the novel stands as the first popular work to alert the public to the growing power of biological science, and to hint that biology would eventually replace physics and nuclear technology as a source of public concern and interest.
Thus, the hazmat-suited figures that were so exotic in the movie forty years ago are now all-too-common. I wrote it because I thought it was an interesting story, and also because it illustrated a technological problem—once something goes wrong, you have trouble ever getting it right again.
The best way to prevent problems is to prevent, not try to correct them. Bob Wise was really very nice about letting people watch and learn from what he was doing.
The microbe, code named "Andromeda", mutates with each growth cycle, changing its biological properties. The scientists learn that the current form of Andromeda grows only within a narrow pH range; in a too-acidic or too- alkaline growth medium, it will not multiply.
Andromeda's ideal pH range is 7. Jackson and Ritter survived because both had abnormal blood pH Jackson acidotic from consumption of Sterno and aspirin , Ritter alkalotic from hyperventilation.
However, by the time the scientists realize this, Andromeda has mutated into a form that degrades the lab's plastic seals and escapes its containment.
Trapped in a contaminated lab, Burton demands that Stone inject him with a "universal antibiotic "; Stone refuses, arguing it would render Burton too vulnerable to infection by other harmful bacteria.
Burton survives because the mutated Andromeda is no longer pathogenic. The mutated Andromeda attacks the synthetic rubber door and hatch seals within the Wildfire facility, rapidly migrating toward the upper levels and the surface.
The self-destruct nuclear weapon is automatically armed when it detects the containment breach, triggering its detonation countdown to prevent the spread of the infection.
As the bomb arms, the scientists realize that given Andromeda's ability to generate matter directly from energy, the organism would be able to consume the released energy and ultimately benefit from a nuclear explosion , forming a large indestructible biofilm within a day.
To halt the detonation, Hall must insert a special key he carries into an emergency substation, one of which should be accessible from any location in Wildfire.
Unfortunately, he is trapped in a section which, due to an oversight, has no substation. He must navigate Wildfire's obstacle course of automatic defenses to reach a working substation on an upper level.
He barely disarms the bomb in time before all the air is evacuated from the deepest level of the Wildfire complex, which contains the remainder of the team and their assistants.
Andromeda is suspected to have eventually mutated into a benign form and migrated to the upper atmosphere, where the oxygen content is lower, better suiting its growth.
Crichton says he was "terrifically impressed" by the book—"a lot of Andromeda is traceable to Ipcress in terms of trying to create an imaginary world using recogniseable techniques and real people.
The "Odd-Man Hypothesis" is a fictional hypothesis that states that unmarried men are better able to execute the best, most dispassionate decisions in crises—in this case, to disarm the nuclear weapon intended to prevent the escape of organisms from the laboratory in the event the auto-destruct sequence is initiated.
In the novel, the Odd-Man explanation is a page in a RAND Corporation report of the results of test series wherein different people were to make command decisions in nuclear and biological wars and chemical crises.
Hall is briefed on the Hypothesis after his arrival at Wildfire. In the book, his copy of the briefing materials has the Hypothesis pages removed; in the film, he is criticized for failure to read the material ahead of time.
Hall is assumed to have the highest "command decision effectiveness index" among the Wildfire team; this is the reason why he is given a control key to the self-destruct mechanism.
Hall initially derides this idea, saying he has no intention of committing suicide before he is told that it is his job to disarm the weapon, rather than to arm it: Stone then admits that the Odd-Man Hypothesis, while accurate in the confines of the book , was essentially a false document used to justify handing over a nuclear weapon to private individuals and out of government control.

Many years prior to this incident, a group of eminent scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Stone Arthur Hill advocated for the construction of a secure laboratory facility that would serve as a base in the event an alien biological life form was returned to Earth from a space mission.
Stone and his team - Drs. Dutton, Leavitt and Hall David Wayne , Kate Reid , and James Olson , respectively - go to the facility, known as Wildfire, and try to first isolate the life form while determining why two people from Piedmont an old wino and a six-month-old baby survived.
The scientists methodically study the alien life form unaware that it has already mutated and presents a far greater danger in the lab, which is equipped with a nuclear self-destruct device should it manage to escape.

Can't say. Whatever - this is pretty darned good science fiction. Sure, it has the vices we've come to expect: scientists with a tendency to act like the crew of the Enterprise, and central protagonists who begin the film by swimming through treacle and end it by leaping tall buildings in a single bound.
As for the former problem, well, it's not so bad here as it usually is. As for the latter, well, it's easy to forgive, because we're put through a very tense ride before our heroes crawl out of the treacle - even afterwards.
They don't make films this tense these days. Or at least, this particular film would have been less tense if it had been made these days.
I don't think a modern director would have resisted the temptation to goof off at some point. THAT'S part of the charm. The film's idea of how scientists behave is rather a silly one, but at least the scientists aren't forced to act GOOFY in order to show that scientists are really human, after all - as if there was any need to show this.
So far as I could tell not that I'm an expert in anything it only stretches into fantasy when it needs to. Wise gives us information, and plenty of it - not techno-babble.
I've heard people snicker at the thirty-year-old look of the film, but I think they're nuts. The art direction is wonderful. In a way it does the same thing as the original Star Trek: it creates a coherent, claustrophobic world by force of sheer simplicity.
