The actors are well cast and the conclusion adds further depth but there is something missing that stops this film from being anything more.
The pacing is slow and kind of unavoidable with the style and direction but this story doesn't gel like it should. It is similar in the story sense like Horns which also failed to connect the high concept with story elements.

It is definitely original, but more conventional in regard to the story than I anticipated. The answer to the mystery of why a nine-year-old boy is lying in a coma is just a matter of connecting the dots.
I did that early on, but figured Jensen would turn everything upside down and present me with a totally unexpected mind-bending alternative.
When she didn't, I grumbled a little and felt let down. But that says more about my preconceptions than it says about the novel. It's a very good book, if you can get past the parts where Louis yammers on in his vegetative state.
Suspenseful, interesting, imaginative and quite the page-turner. One thing bothered me though. Suddenly there is a lot of philosophizing about women, women's nature, women's thinking and women's wily tricks, all based on one particular woman.
One character even has to reassure another that not ALL women are conniving bitches. Where the frak did that come from?
I honestly don't know what to think of this book. The premise is good, really good, it has the potential to be epic. But the story feels rushed, the relationships between characters aren't built well enough for us to be sympathetic toward them, especially between Natalie and Pascal.
Add to that, the "solution" of the mystery is obvious from the beginning, but I think the author was being transparent on purpose. She wanted us to know, maybe to make us feel smart that we "solved" the mystery befor I honestly don't know what to think of this book.

Louis is extremely accident prone, having almost died eight times. His parents have a troubled relationship. On his ninth birthday, at a picnic, some horrible accident occurs.
Louis's father disappears and Louis ends up in a coma. Here enters the other narrator, Pascal, a doctor specializing in coma recovery.
After a series of stange and creepy discoveries, Pascal learns that Louis's mother, whim he has fallen in love with, killed her husband and attempted to kill Louis basically because she is Louis is extremely accident prone, having almost died eight times.

I managed to read this book quite quickly! However, I feel that this book is split in terms of how many stars I would give it. The first half of the book I didn't like, I found it too slow, too much 'world building' - it didn't grab me.
But I began to gain interest in the Doctor's chapters and then it quickly drew me into wanting to know more about Louis and his weird case.
The latter half of the book is five stars. The action, the intensity of the characters, the story and the pace was captivatin I managed to read this book quite quickly!

Dalton warns Allan not to become involved with Natalie, telling him that Peter is not Louis's real father, and at one point Natalie attempted to give Louis up for adoption.
Natalie confesses to Allan that Louis was the result of rape, and despite Dalton's warnings, she and Allan have sex.
Louis is visited in the hospital by his grandmother, Violet, who notices Allan and Natalie's relationship. She warns Allan that Natalie is unstable and manipulative.
Dalton suddenly enters, informing Violet and Allan that Peter's body has been found at the bottom of a cliff, having been dead for several days.
While all of the above is happening, Louis continues to narrate. At certain points he is visited by a mysterious creature covered in seaweed.
Louis visits the creature in a cave, and it is revealed to be Louis's manifestation of Peter, who was found dead in a cave covered in seaweed.
One day, while waking up from a nap, Allan is told by another doctor that not only did he sleepwalk during his nap, but he also wrote a prescription for Natalie, for dangerous doses of insulin and chloroform.
This, combined with Allan's other dreams and the suspicious letters, leads Allan to believe that while he sleeps, Louis has somehow been controlling him and his actions.
Allan informs Dr. Louis reveals what happened during the picnic: Natalie tries to give Louis some candy but refuses to allow Peter to have any, making Peter suspicious and leading to a fight.
Louis flees to the cliff edge, while Natalie and Peter follow and get into a scuffle, which ends when Natalie pushes Peter off the cliff to his death.
Louis sees this and walks off the edge of the cliff on his own in an apparent suicide attempt. At this point, Louis's heartbeat suddenly stops and Allan wakes up.
While Allan tries to revive him with a defibrillator , it is shown that Natalie is responsible for Louis's "accidents", having done things such as poison his candy, electrocute him while near a socket, and smother him with a pillow.
Allan succeeds in restarting Louis's heart while Natalie looks on. Some time later, Allan moves out after separating from his wife.
He visits Natalie, who has been placed in a psychiatric ward under Dr. Perez's care. Perez explains to Allan that he has diagnosed Natalie with Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
It is shown that Natalie is now pregnant, presumably with Allan's child. In a final narration, Louis ponders whether being in a coma forever is bad, as it allows him to stay with his father.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax - Ending Scene (HD)The only problem with the movie, is that besides the children's fantasy combining the mystery, Thriller, The movie does and has other elements that don't jump out of nowhere necessarily, but don't fit the whole story.
Pascal has a background that's perfect for helping Louis Drax and others find out what happen to him, but using this is too inconsistent and turns it into the Sci-fi movie that I thought it would be looking at the poster, but takes you out of what they are trying to do.
But overall, I liked what is going on with the 9th Life of Louis Drax. The kid who plays Louis Drax tells a great tale of scandal and mystery, from the point of view of a child.

It was so poignant, so heartbreaking, so real. But alas, I had to go halfway, I had to make a fair rating. Three stars, perhaps even 3. As the last few chapters of the story made it worthwhile to read the first half.

That's how the book started and I was really into it at the beginning, trust me I try to like this book but I don't find myself connected to the characters, I feel like its all over the place.
I don't find myself enthusiasts enough to continue reading. Maybe its not f DNF- I am struggling to write a review for this book because I just don't know what to think.
Maybe its not for me or my kind of book, but it could be your cup of tea because Bloomsbury productions normally produce good books Yay Harry Potter.

I didn't read anything by Liz Jensen before, though I heard quite some stuff about her recently published The Rapture.
Now that I have read this one, The Rapture is launched straight to the top of my wishlist. Louis Drax is an accident-prone nine year old boy from Lyon.
Strange things happen to him; he is obsessed with death, strange animals, poisons and raping. Mysteries are built around his young life.
After having eight close-to-death experiences, one for each year of his life, the ninth chan I didn't read anything by Liz Jensen before, though I heard quite some stuff about her recently published The Rapture.
After having eight close-to-death experiences, one for each year of his life, the ninth changes the course of several lives. One day, onhis ninth birthday, he goes to a picnic with his parents.
There a horrible accident happens. Louis falls off a cliff and survives, but is in a deep coma. His father disappears in the ravine too and the only witness is his mother, who seems to hide shocking secrets herself.
He is taken to a specialized clinic in Provence to be under surveillance of Dr Dannachet, one of the best neurologists in France. Soon, strange things start to happen.
People in coma don't communicate, let alone write threatening letters to their mother and doctor. Or do they?
The Ninth Life of Louis Drax was a chilling reading experience. It was unsettling and disturbing. Its' written from the perspective of Louis and Dr Dannchet, and their voices mingle and succeed each other through the book.
The voice of Louis is the frightening one. Following his thoughts was a pretty creepy experience. Imagine a child in coma having a friend wrapped in bloody bandages who leads him through the labyrinths of his mind on the subconscious level.
It should have been obvious from the beginning who Gustave was, but it's another of the shocking moments that this book is full of. Louis sometimes seems to have a too ripe voice for a nine year old child, but as the story unveils, you realize it's not much of a surprise that Louis is thinking about these things.
Dr Dannachet is a character that grows through the story, and goes through a life-turning experience.
Falling in love with Louis' mother was the last thing he needs-and the one thing he can't resist.
He is torn inside and Liz did a great job describing the turmoil in his soul. Here is one paragraph that perfectly catches what he feels: "A mixture of feelings-love, distaste, revulsion, pity-rose in my throat like vomit.
There was an eternity to that moment, that see-sawing split-second when adoration clung and then lurched, spilling into chaos, rage, hate, anger; the desire to smash and embrace, love and destroy.
But I'll just say that the thematic is being taken on a whole new level and the ending is everything but predictable. Liz has a beautiful writing voice and provides a narrative that will grip you from the first sentence.
That's one I'd like to share. The only titled chapter is the first one. Stuff happens to me that shouldn't happen, like going on a picnic where you drown.
Liz Jensen keeps shocking you on every single page without watering down the story. It hangs somewhere in between, and I'd love it to be at least a bit darker to fully capture the spirit of the incident.
The Ninth Life of Louis Drax is a fast-paced and extremely exciting thriller that will have you bound to the book from the very beginning. It takes you on a tour through the maze of your subconscious and raises lots of questions.

If you like Chuck Palahniuk's style, you should definitely give Liz Jensen a try. In this book, there are two narrators, each with a really distinctive voice.
Louis is a disturbed 9-year-old boy who has fallen or was he pushed? His father goes missing the same afternoon and Louis dies, but comes back to life and introduces himself to the reader while in a coma.
He also likes to tack explanatory phrases onto the ends If you like Chuck Palahniuk's style, you should definitely give Liz Jensen a try.
