Sounds like a good premise, right? And it is and as performed by Clooney, Gates and Roberts more on her later , this had the makings of an interesting hostage drama with a cautionary tale of our voyeuristic tendencies of watching tragedy unfold on live TV.
As played by Dominic West, all this CEO was missing was tying the girl to the train tracks and twirling his mustache. It was fun to watch these two veterans chew the scenery with each other.

Director Jodie Foster can rely on outstanding acting performances and the editing makes for a very engaging film. As it progresses things become a tad more conventional, then again, a very preachy, sarcastic ending wouldn't have worked either.

The story follows the host of a financial television show who's held hostage on-air by a disgruntled investor who's intent on holding him accountable for his stock tips and demands answers as to why his top pick crashed.
The cast is pretty solid; George Clooney and Julia Roberts in particular give very strong performances. And, the storytelling does a good job at building tension and at developing the mystery of the stock fall.
Additionally, there's some rather clever satire about financial entertainment. Still, the plot is fairly predictable though there are a few twists on some of the usual tropes.

The yammer and righteousness defeat Clooney and even Julia Roberts, stuck at a console twitching knobs and micromanaging frowns as the producer trying to hold the show together.

And it's refreshing to have a studio picture about anti-heroes rather than super-heroes. Sandra Hall. Money Monster works better as comedy than thriller - but that's not all it wants to be.
Paul Byrnes. Money Monster is entertaining enough as a thriller. It is also strangely undercharged and lacking in ambition given the talent behind it.
Geoffrey Macnab. The frenzied drama has no clear point of view besides its air of celebrity condescension.
Richard Brody. With all the ranting about a "rigged" financial system, the movie certainly captures the zeitgeist, but it' so overloaded with action-movie tropes and tech-based plot contrivances that it begins to feel a little silly.
Entertaining but not as intelligent as its conceit would promise, Money Monster is a glossy melodrama good enough to pass the time but ultimately disappointing considering the talent behind the camera.
