Midnight in Paris (2011) Trailer - HD MovieI studied French in college, but I never made it to Paris. I saw this movie the day after the terrorists bombings, because I am saving money to finally go to Paris next summer.
This movie does for Paris what Manhattan did for New York - you can feel like you are walking in the city, you can feel Allen's love and respect for what Paris is all about - the present and the past.
And what a trip it is, being able to spend time with the writers and painters of the 20s when Paris was the place to go to create.
I understand his trip because I go in my mind in trips like that when, for example, I go to an exhibition of Paris Posters, which depict very clearly the artistic life, it's like I walk the place.
The acting is good, though I could see in Owen Wilson's portrayal a slightly more romantic and less neurotic Woody Allen. The cinematography is just beautiful - the places, the colors.
Now I wish I could get into that car at midnight and go meet Simone de Beauvoir. I love movies about time-travel, but this one was unique in that it's actually pretty funny and not just dramatic.
This movie is also very clean; I would recommend it as one you could show to the whole family. The film is about a writer who feels he was born in the wrong era.
While in Paris with his fiancee, they run into her obnoxious rich friends. The writer can't get along with them because they're unbearably pretentious, so he makes an excuse to wander off on his own.
He comes upon a certain street where, at midnight each night, a carriage takes passengers back in time. When he realizes what's happening, and that all the colorful characters he's meeting are his literary heroes, he schedules more and more meetings with them, even getting their input on his current manuscript.
He even falls in love with a woman from the era, and his lies in the present begin to compound and confuse his modern life.
The movie is fantastic but in a way that seems believable, and you never know what's going to happen next. The ending wasn't what I expected, but it wrapped up with a very satisfying conclusion.
I think this is a film I could watch again and again. MIP is interesting on so many levels. I have been a Woody fan since Tiger Lilly and this has become my new favorite.
The wonder-full blend of fantasy and reality touches the heart and stimulates the mind to look at one's self and life in a fresh new way.
This is art about art And oh yes, love. To be yourself and follow your dreams or to be a phony and sell out to wealth and security.
The perennial dichotomy becomes very personal and intimate here and I often found myself lost and emotionally engaging with the characters. I am still thinking about them a day later.
And feeling them too. Woody sure has an eye for talent and casting. This cast is absolutely stellar. And those beautiful Parisian girls!
There is something going on here that I can feel but can't quite understand. For me this is a special film and I'm not really sure why. I guess in a way this could have been my life.

The mechanics and nature of the business somehow get in the way and the original conception of the screenplay, and what Woody has envisaged is not fully realised.
He surely cannot say that about this film. A distillation of nearly fifty years' film-making experience makes this film almost perfect.
Often one gets to the middle or end of a film and finds it is somehow unsatisfying, doesn't make sense, is irrelevant, boring or whatever yes, even Woody Allen films, and I'm a fan!
This film with its perfect synchronisation of plot, concept, style, and characterisation as evidenced in its visuals and dialogue fits together like a swiss clock.
Naff thing to say but true. This film actually IS Woody Allen. If you like Woody you are in for a treat and a treatise on the joys of nostalgia and yet how it relates to our choices and how we can live in the present and a perfect ninety minutes of happiness.
I won't spoil it, but a writer can take you anywhere. And he does. A hoot! Not a fan of Owen Wilson usually but thoroughly enjoyed this delightful piece of whimsy.
However he comes to realise that there is ultimately no substitute for living in the present and making the most of your life.
Woody Allen knows how to tell a story with subtlety and profundity without becoming too intellectually disengaged from the viewer.
